‘One of Us’ *

Margaret Thatcher, on a famous occasion, tapped an individual member in a group photo of Conservative MPs, and asked, “Is he one of us?”

A vital question.

Karl Marx took it for granted that, all else being equal, people act in their own economic interest. And a lot of people take it for granted that some form of ‘selfishness’ is key to understanding human behaviour. But even Marx called on “Workers of the World” to “unite”. Because the affiliation motive is itself deeper than self-interest, as Thatcher recognised. Humans are tribal animals, and need to be “one of” some “Us” or other.

(Aristotle said “political animal”. I think politics, even if broadly conceived, doesn’t cover the whole ground.)

You may find this point developed as you stroll further through the fairground.
